About Aripeka
Aripeka was settled as Gulf Key in 1873, and the post office that opened in 1895 took the name Aripeka, after the Seminole leader Abiaka. When Pasco and Hernando counties were split in 1887, the line went straight through the village, and it still does.
Only 320 people lived there in the 2020 census, but the village has an outsized history: Babe Ruth came to fish, and the artist James Rosenquist kept a studio here.

Homes sit along Hammock Creek, its side channels and the edge of the Gulf marsh. Many are older fishing cottages and stilt houses, with walls built piece by piece over decades rather than as a single development.

Know which county your lot is in
Because Aripeka straddles the county line, two neighbors on the same creek can need permits from different counties. Check your parcel on the property appraiser site before choosing a contractor, and make sure they're set up to pull permits in that county.
Which office handles Aripeka permits
Parcels on the Pasco side go through Pasco County. Parcels on the Hernando side go through the Hernando County Building Division in Brooksville.
Your parcel decides it: Pasco County Building Construction Services ((727) 847-8126) or Hernando County Building Division ((352) 754-4050). Search the address on the Pasco County Property Appraiser site before anyone files.
On top of the local permit, a job can need state or federal review depending on where the new work sits. Florida law (section 403.813(1)(e)) exempts restoring a wall within 18 inches waterward of its old line from certain state permits, and your contractor should confirm which reviews apply.

What to look at on a Aripeka wall
- Confirm whether your parcel is on the Pasco or Hernando side
- Note whether the wall faces the creek current or open marsh
- Ask whether marsh or seagrass near the wall limits what can be built
- Check whether the contractor can bring equipment in by road or needs a barge
We'll pass your details to one licensed local contractor, not a call list.

No two walls price the same, so treat these as reference points. Small, remote jobs carry a bigger share of travel and setup cost, and marsh-edge lots can need extra environmental review. Ask whether combining work with a neighbor is possible.

Aripeka seawall questions
Is Aripeka in Pasco or Hernando County?
Both. The county line runs through the village along Hammock Creek, so it depends on your parcel.
Which office handles my seawall permit?
Pasco County Building Construction Services for the Pasco side, and the Hernando County Building Division for the Hernando side.
Can I build a new wall where there wasn't one?
New walls on natural shoreline get much tougher review than repairs. Ask a contractor and the county early, before you plan around it.
