Bayport and its waterfront
Bayport was a busy cotton and supply port in the 1850s and briefly served as the Hernando County seat until 1856. During the Civil War, blockade runners used it from 1862 to 1865, and it stayed a transport hub until the railroad reached Brooksville in 1885.
Today Bayport is tiny, with 45 residents in the 2020 census. The county and the Southwest Florida Water Management District rebuilt the Bayport marina and park in 2008.
What Bayport seawalls look like
The few homes here are spread along the river mouth and the edge of the marsh, so each wall faces a different mix of river current, tide and open-Gulf wave exposure.
