About Hernando Beach

Charlie Sasser developed Hernando Beach between 1959 and 1965 by dredging canals out of the coastal marsh. Wetland development limits imposed in 1971 stopped further expansion, which is why the community has stayed about the same size since. It had 2,452 residents in the 2020 census, with a median age of 60.3.

The community runs from Osowaw Boulevard north to Minnow Creek, with Shoal Line Boulevard along its east side. The Hernando Beach Channel links it to the Gulf, and the county has long pushed to deepen it from about 4.5 feet to 6 feet at mean low water.

Waterfront homes in Hernando Beach

The north section has deep, wide canals with direct Gulf access, and listings commonly advertise seawalls from about 60 to more than 120 feet long. Many original walls are now 60 years old.

Helene's surge, estimated at about 8 feet here, flooded many single-story homes. The National Hurricane Center counted at least 500 homes in Hernando County with major damage, mostly from surge along the coast.

Common seawall jobs in Hernando Beach

Long walls make inspections pay off

With 100-plus feet of wall on many lots, a full inspection can find the weak sections before they fail and keep the repair to part of the wall instead of all of it. Ask for a written report that marks problems by distance along the wall.

Which office handles Hernando Beach permits

Hernando Beach is unincorporated, so building permits go through the Hernando County Building Division in Brooksville.

The office to call is Hernando County Building Division at 789 Providence Blvd., Brooksville, FL 34601, (352) 754-4050.

State and federal rules can also apply, especially if work moves the wall waterward or affects seagrass or marsh. Restoring a wall within 18 inches waterward of where it stood is covered by an exception in Florida Statutes 403.813(1)(e); get your contractor to confirm the rest in writing.

Every wall is different, so these are reference figures, not quotes. Long lots mean big totals even at moderate per-foot prices, so the repair-versus-replace question matters a lot here. Fixing a bad section early can save a full replacement later.

Reference figures, not quotes. Angi, seawall repair cost (2026 data): about $100–$250 per linear foot for repairs. LatestCost, Florida seawall replacement (2026): about $500–$1,200 per linear foot. HomeAdvisor, sea wall cost: average $25,000, typical $15,000–$60,000. Checked October 2026.
