Dock Repair & Boat Lifts: what it involves
A canal dock is a deck on wooden or concrete pilings, usually tied to the seawall at the shore end, often with a boat lift beside it. Salt water, sun and boat traffic wear it from every direction: boards cup and split, fasteners rust, and pilings get eaten away at the waterline where wood stays wet and dry by turns.
Storm surge adds a different kind of damage. When water rises above the deck, it can lift boards and float sections off, and the boats and debris it carries hit pilings and lift frames. After Helene, many Hudson Beach and Hernando Beach owners found loose decking, leaning pilings and lifts that no longer run.
Signs your dock or lift needs work
- Boards that are soft, split, cupped or popping their fasteners
- Pilings worn thin or soft at the waterline
- A deck that sags, slopes or moves when you walk on it
- Rust on lift cables, beams or motor mounts, or a lift that stalls or tilts
- Gaps where the dock meets the seawall cap
A soft piling or a frayed lift cable fails all at once. Get it checked first.
Free EstimateCommon methods
Deck board replacement
Worn boards are swapped for new pressure-treated wood or composite, with stainless or coated fasteners for salt water.
Piling wraps and replacement
Pilings that are still sound can be wrapped to stop wear at the waterline; badly worn ones are cut out and new pilings are driven or jetted in.
Boat lift service and replacement
Cables, motors, switches and cradles are repaired or replaced, or the lift is replaced with one rated for the boat.
Permits for dock work
Swapping a few boards is usually maintenance, but new pilings, a rebuilt deck, a new boat lift or a larger footprint generally need a building permit from the county or city office for the parcel. Florida law exempts some small private docks from certain state permits depending on size and the type of waterway, but local permits still apply. Ask the contractor to confirm in writing.

How a dock or lift repair usually goes
- Walk the dockThe contractor checks every board and connection and probes pilings at and below the waterline.
- Test the liftThey run the lift and look at cables, pulleys, motor and cradle bunks.
- Repair or replaceYou get a written scope saying which parts to fix now and whether a rebuild makes more sense.
- Permit if neededStructural work, new pilings or a new lift are permitted with the right office.
- Build and testBoards, pilings or lift parts are installed, and the lift is run with the boat on it.
Ask whether the seawall where the dock ties in should be checked in the same visit.
What dock and lift repair costs
Angi's boat dock repair guide puts reinforcement at about $250 to $1,400 and full restoration at about $500 to $3,200, while boat lift work runs about $2,000 to $20,000 depending on the lift. Full dock replacement averages about $15,000, and Angi's rule of thumb is to replace when repairs pass half that cost.

Dock Repair & Boat Lifts questions
Do you only handle seawalls?
No. The same local contractors usually repair docks and boat lifts too, and doing both in one visit saves a trip.
Should I fix the dock or replace it?
If repairs come to about half the price of a new dock, replacement is usually the better buy.
Can my boat lift be repaired?
Often. Cables, motors and switches are replaceable parts. A bent frame or a lift too small for the boat usually means a new lift.
